Derek C. Henson

Derek C. Henson is a native of Philadelphia, Mississippi.  He relocated to Memphis, Tennessee  several years ago from Jackson, Mississippi.  He graduated from Jackson State University in 1991 with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Political Science / Pre-law.  He completed his Master of Science Degree in Educational Leadership and Policy Studies in December 2002 from the University of Memphis.  In addition, Derek also received a Certification in Urban Youth Ministries through the Memphis Leadership Foundation / Urban Youth Initiative with Crichton College in June 2003.

Since relocating to Memphis, Derek has worked with various organizations such as Shelby County Head Start, Inc, Frayser Family Counseling Center, Urban Youth Initiative, and The New Olivet Baptist Church.  He currently serves as the Program Manager for MIFA’s Teen Job Services.

Derek is an Ordained Minister at The New Olivet Baptist Church, where he diligently works with the Youth Program. He also teaches the Eighth Grade Sunday School class in addition to being a mentor to three 18 year old young men. He is also very active with the Jackson State University Alumni Association - Memphis Chapter, were he currently serves as President.

Derek’s overall mission is to empower teenagers and young adults to become successful and productive members of society by continuing to be a positive role model for them.
